ALTO DE PIOZ

Last summer I met the well-known Mexican artist and grounder of the foundation CASA WABI Bosco Sodi at the restaurant Cantina on Sifnos island in Greece. He told me that together with his brother Claudio he is running a small winery in the region Guadalajara in Spain. I got very intrigued, as this region is not that famous like Rioja, Catalunya or Priorat, but obviously very old. Few months later I was sitting in the plain direction Madrid…

Claudio took me on the ride through the region, showing me most beautiful vineyards, I have ever seen. He explained to me that the winery Alto de Pioz (Pioz is the name of the village where the winery is located) is recovering and cultivating grapes that are around 90 years old. Mainly local varieties such as Tempranillo and Malvar. It is basically the cultural heritage.

Together with the oenologist Aurelio Garcia they create wines that are terroir driven, elegant, clear, and raw. Trough limestone rocks whose cracks and roughness are mixed with bright colors of clay, wines are enhanced by the archaic spirit of the region and only refined in the cellar by the winemaker himself.
