ATTILA HOMONNA

After being a journalist and DJ Attila retrained as a winemaker and in 1999 he established his own winery. Since then, he is making some of most compelling wines in Hungary. His small, boutique winery is situated in the village of Erdöbénye, in the famous wine region Tokaj. 100 years old grapes of Furmint and Hárslevelü, most prominent Hungarian varieties, grow in historic vineyards on the volcanic soil and as such they produce wines with unique expression and complexity.

“I didn’t learn from a father, I learned from the teacher.” This statement describes Attila’s general approach to the winemaking process: he respects the tradition, but he is not enslaved by it. He follows the rules, but in his innovative spirit he remines free. Attila was never following trends, and this makes his wines classic, but authentic.

If you want to know how Furmint from Tokaj, dry or sweet, should taste, then you should drink Attila’s wines. His wines are the unique expression of the soil and fruit, their structure is dense and taste intense, but they still remine subtle and gentle in their character. On the first sip you might think they are shy, but in the glass, they open up like savage flowers.

Today Attila is the pioneer of organic viticulture and now himself a teacher for other young winemakers who want to follow the “low intervention” techniques in cellar. Currently he is building another small winery on the beautiful Balaton Lake, where he produces the outstanding Kekfrankos wines.
